- Obv: A bust of Liberty faces left with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border and the date 1869 below. Liberty is wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and ornamented with a single star, and the portrait is very similar to that used on the regular issue nickel three-cent piece of 1865 to 1889. Rev: A laurel wreath encircles the Roman numeral V, at the top of which is a small Maltese cross and a scroll inscribed with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. Hazy silver surfaces are a bit subdued to help explain the Proof-62 grade from NGC, but the frosty motifs are sharply struck and contrast somewhat with lightly reflective fields. According to the uspatterns.com website, "These were issued in sets along with a cent and three cent piece similar to those made the previous year." Approximately 100 specimens were produced in nickel.
