- The 1888-S is one of the scarcer Morgan dollars of its era, due primarily to a limited mintage of 657,000 pieces. For reasons that have been lost to history, silver dollar production at the San Francisco Mint remained low during to mid to late 1880s as the Philadelphia and New Orleans mints accounted for the vast majority of examples struck. The present offering is for a desirable Gem whose otherwise sandy-silver surfaces are enhanced by a bold crescent of rose-apricot iridescence lining the lower reverse border.
