Lot Description
1851/81 Braided Hair Cent. N-3. Rarity-1. 51 Over Inverted 18. MS-66 BN (NGC). The warm golden-bronze patina is accented by a vibrant sapphire blue iridescence around the devices on this beautiful Gem. Satiny luster complements this beautiful coloration, blanketing uniformly bold design elements. Dramatic die lines are apparent around Liberty's portrait and the underlying digits of the date are clear and sharp despite a later die state. A trivial mark appears on Liberty's chin, thought he surfaces are otherwise smooth and without distractions. This wonderful overdate specimen approaches the finest known for the Newcomb-3 variety, and it is tied with only 4 other examples in this designation with none finer at NGC. A truly exceptional example of this desirable Red Bookvariety. Provenance: Ex Chris Victory McCawley, September 2005; Robert Kellert. NGC Census: 5; none finer (1851/18 N-3 variety only) PCGS# 400138. NGC ID: 226H. Click here for certification details from NGC.
