- Lot Description
- 1865-S Seated Liberty Half Dime. MS-64 (PCGS). Secure Holder. This is the rare heavily repunched date variety of Valentine-1, and undoubtedly the finest of that issue. The repunching shows on the 1 and the 65 the most, with an additional tail on the 8. All seen have a die scratch from Liberty's knee down toward the shield. The reverse has a dramatic bisecting and meandering die crack from the upper left to lower right. Satiny silver-gray in color with a touch of toning and good luster. The strike is sharp on all save the upper left wreath of the reverse, and light clashing is noted in the obverse field. The mintage of 120,000 was greatly reduced by time and attrition. A formidable condition rarity that should command attention from knowledgable specialists of this series.
