- Manley Die State 3.0. The reverse is rotated 45 degrees clockwise from normal coin alignment. Lovely autumn-brown patina blankets surfaces that reveal faint tinges of faded mint color in the protected areas around some of the design elements. A spot at central reverse and another on the obverse outside star 1 are noted, but otherwise the surfaces are remarkably smooth for the assigned grade. Sharply struck. The scarcer of the two known die marriages of the issue, C-1 is a major rarity in Mint State. Bill Eckberg (2019) accounts for only 10 or so at this level and further notes that "the variety is very difficult to find in grades above EF." Even the fabled Cohen and Eliasberg collections could only muster AUs, while the Garrett collection lacked an example of the 1825 C-1. Clearly an important offering for the advanced half cent enthusiast, this lovely Select Uncirculated example is sure to see spirited at auction.
