- Only 5,750 circulation strike $3 gold pieces came off the dies during this Civil War year. As the war raged in the East, gold and silver coins were actively hoarded; many of the coins struck then reentered circulation later in the Reconstruction era. This minimally circulated example has a rich golden-honey color and just a bare trace of wear on the well struck devices. Scarce in all grades and rare in Mint State, this is a desirable AU example that will reward the aggressive bidder.
