Lot Description
A wonderfully and totally original example of this very RARE classic commemorative gold dollar struck in Proof. Approximately 100 Proofs were struck, which were distributed to well connected collectors and other V.I.P.s of the era, and as such, most of them are estimated to survive today (PCGS estimates 90 survived in all grades). This piece is genuinely CHOICE and pleasing with great orange-gold color and orange-peal texture in the fields. This coin is most likely one of the last ones struck with a dramatic die crack from the rim by the N in UNITED (a feature not described by Breen, Swiatek, or Garrett/Guth in the references on Proofs, Commemoratives, or U.S. Gold Coins, respectively). A tiny strike through can be seen in the central reverse, as well as a tiny planchet flaw in the obverse field (all mint made). A layer of iridescent tone can be seen on both sides, giving this piece a wonderfully original look. Only 100 Proofs were struck. PCGS 8, NGC 2, CAC 2. The last time one sold was four years ago, in a different market. Since then appreciation for commemoratives and rarities has gone up. A PCGS PR64 CAC sold in April 2021 for $14,400. In PR63 the PCGS Price Guide value is $11,000 and the CAC CPG value is $10,100. This is a classic example, one of the rarest early commemorative issues. Cert. Number 81729225 PCGS # 7483
