Lot Description
Gorgeous Mint State 1785 Crosby 5-E Nova Constellatio Copper Ex Ford 1785 Nova Constellatio Copper. Crosby 5-E, W-1915. Rarity-4+. CONSTELLATIO, Pointed Rays. MS-62 BN (PCGS). 98.4 grains. A simply outstanding example of a variety that can be difficult to find even in Extremely Fine grades. Both sides are warmly and evenly toned in medium brown. The surfaces appear smooth and hard to the unaided eye. The centers are quite sharp with most of the detail showing. Obverse slightly off center to 11 o'clock, top of the letters CONS in CONSTELATIO run to or off the flan. The reverse is much better centered, just a bit tight at the lower left. Our (Stack's) Ford V sale offered three examples of this conditionally challenging die pairing, and this was the second finest based on our conservative grade therein. Really a lovely example, and eagerly awaiting inclusion in another impressive Nova Constellatio collection. Provenance: Ex Hillyer C. Ryder; F.C.C. Boyd; John J. Ford, Jr.; our (Stack's) sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part V, October 2004, lot 57; Anthony Terranova, September 21, 2006. Collector envelope with attribution and provenance notes included. PCGS# 813. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
