Lot Description
One of the most desirable type varieties in the Classic Head half cent series, the 1828 Cohen-3 has an extant population of 5,300 pieces in all grades (per Bill Eckberg, 2019). This total includes at least 1,000 Mint State coins obtained by Washington, D.C. coin dealer Benjamin H. Collins in 1884. While these were still available in roll quantity as late as the 1950s, the coins have since been widely dispersed among collectors and, today, offerings are rarely for more than one example at a time. The present lot features a frosty near-Gem with minimal toning in pale olive-brown to surfaces that retain plenty of vivid rose-red mint color. Manley Die State 4.0.
