Lot Description
1865 Pattern Liberty Eagle. Judd-450, Pollock-522. Rarity-6+. Proof-65 RB (NGC). This is a Transitional pattern that combines the obverse of the regular issue 1865 Liberty Eagle with the Motto reverse type as adopted for regular issue coinage in 1866. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.
First offered for sale through Haseltine's auction of the Idler patterns in April 1870, Judd-450 is a scarce pattern with not many more than a dozen specimens believed extant. Iridescent gray-brown overtones hardly prevent us from appreciating dominant reddish-orange color. Nicely mirrored in the fields, the devices are fully struck with pinpoint detail. A few minor carbon deposits on the obverse are mentioned solely for accuracy. Tied for finest certified!
