Lot Description

1722-H French Colonies Sou, or 9 Deniers. La Rochelle Mint. W-11840. VF-20. 94.5 grains. Finely granular with mahogany brown surfaces. Fairly glossy, good eye appeal, some old buildup around obverse legends and central reverse. Obverse aligned significantly to 8 o'clock, F of FRANCOISES barely on the planchet, mintmark close to edge, denticles visible from 10 o'clock to 3 o'clock. Reverse also off-center to 9 o'clock, with most of BENEDICTUM off the planchet. Two die cracks are noted at the left side of the reverse. No bad marks, a couple very light old pinscratches on obverse. Craige noted "Found other spec. (Reford Coll) obv off-center as this - had slightly more of 'CTUM' of left obv. leg." PCGS# 158629. Provenance: From the Ted L. Craige Collection. Purchased from Bedford's Barn, Maine, in July 1965.
