- 1853-N Octagonal $1. BG-530. Rarity-2. Liberty Head. MS-64 (NGC). Satiny and bright, this yellow-gold example also sports smooth surfaces that are at the threshold of full Gem quality. This early issue saw active circulation (as confirmed by the fact that more than a dozen examples were found with the shipwreck of the S.S. Winfield Scott) and, while it is plentiful in an absolute sense, Mint State examples such as this are quite scarce in today's market. Neither PCGS nor NGC has certified a single coin finer than MS-64.
