Description du lot
161.4 grains. Appreciable mint orange color clings to many of the design elements on both sides of this otherwise warmly toned olive and gray-brown example. A splash of slightly darker color at upper right reverse is associated with microscopic surface build up, seemingly this otherwise smooth-looking coin's only impediment to a full Gem Mint State grade. The impression is drawn to 7 o'clock on the obverse, 11 o'clock on the reverse, peripheral features in those areas flush with the borders, borders opposite soft with distinct flat areas. Newman Die State B/D, the obverse cracked from the border to the top of the first digit 1 in the date, reverse cracked from the border at 8 o'clock into ring 10.<p>By Fugio copper standards Newman 8-B is an available die marriage in Mint State. Most such pieces trace their pedigree to the Bank of New York Hoard, in which some 246 examples of Newman 8-B resided as late as 1948. A common provenance is where the similarity between this PCGS-certified, premium near-Gem and most other Mint State examples of the die pair comes to an abrupt end. Exceptionally nice, this is a noteworthy condition rarity fit for inclusion in an advanced type set or specialized Fugio cabinet.
