Lot Description
1853-DERI Octagonal $1. BG-522. Rarity-6+. Liberty Head. AU-53 (PCGS). Richly original surfaces exhibit blended reddish-rose highlights on deep honey-gold. Satiny surfaces are impressively smooth for having seen light commercial use, and the design elements retain universally bold definition. This elusive variety was discovered by Samuel Willett Comstock of Boston sometime before 1935; the discovery coin's offering in Thomas L. Elder's January 1935 sale of the Comstock-Gunther Collection represents the variety's first auction appearance. With very few additional pieces confirmed since, and even the best that the Jay Roe Collection could muster for BG-522 a harshly cleaned EF, this is a highly significant example in a PCGS AU-53 holder that will serve as a highlight in any specialized cabinet. Provenance: From the Oregon Collection. Earlier ex Jack Totheroh Collection; Kagin's ANA National Money Show Auction of March 2017, lot 1726. PCGS Population: 1; 13 finer, four of which are Mint State (MS-62 finest). PCGS# 10499. NGC ID: 2BLL. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
