- 1879 Liberty Double Eagle. MS-63 (PCGS). A frosty and lustrous specimen with deep honey gold surfaces and warm olive highlights. A solitary contact mark in Liberty's hair is the only readily apparent blemish of note. From a mintage of 207,600 pieces intended for general circulation. The Bowers reference notes: ""Although this is not a common date by any means, for the specialist examples are readily available in grades from VF through MS-62, the plenitude due to imports from foreign banks."" Nearly 200 examples of the date have been certified in the MS-60 to MS-62 range by PCGS, but at MS-63 as here, and finer, the population thins dramatically. A great opportunity to obtain an early date in the Type III double eagle series.
