Lot Description
1845-D Liberty Quarter Eagle. MS-64 (PCGS). Bright and lustrous yellow gold with pale olive highlights. Sharply struck and aesthetically appealing, and free of distracting marks of any measure. One of 19,460 examples of the date struck, representing an about average mintage for Dahlonega Mint quarter eagles of the 1840s. Much of the mintage saw heavy commercial duty in and around Dahlonega, with the average grade today a well circulated VF to EF. Finer than the example we offered in our sale of Part II of the Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection, October 1999, lot 376, that coin graded MS-63 by PCGS and at the time the finest certified of the date. We note here that the present specimen is the finest of just eight Mint State examples of the date certified by PCGS. This world-class Dahlonega quarter eagle is currently the finest graded by any major grading service, and as such it is likely the finest known example extant. We expect hearty bidding enthusiasm will be the order of the day when this important quarter eagle enters the auction arena.
