Lot Description
Struck in standard or goloid silver alloy. <strong>Obv:</strong> Head of Liberty facing let with the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM above, the date 1880 below, and 13 stars arranged around the border seven left, six right. Liberty's hair is tied in a bun and she wears a ribbon around the top of her head that is inscribed LIBERTY. <strong>Rev:</strong> The inscription 895.8 S. / 4.2 - G. / 100 - C. / 25 GRAMS is centered within a beaded circle, outside of which is a wreath of corn and cotton. The Latin motto DEO EST GLORIA is inscribed within an ornamental cartouche at the top of the wreath. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is inscribed along the upper border and the denomination ONE DOLLAR is inscribed along the lower border. A deeply toned piece with dominant charcoal-olive and midnight blue patina. The underlying fields are flashy and reveal iridescent highlights of blue, pink and gold when the coin dips into a light. The <em>uspatterns.com</em> website accounts for only about a dozen examples of Judd-1648 in silver.
