Satiny luster shines forth boldly from handsome pinkish-honey surfaces. The 1861 double eagle has long been sought after as the preferred issue for type collections courtesy of its generous mintage of nearly three million pieces. Fortunately, due to the general suspension of specie payments by larger banks at the outbreak of the Civil War, a number of Mint State specimens survive to this day and are eagerly sought by both gold type collectors and double eagle enthusiasts.
