Lot Description
Silky smooth surfaces are essentially untoned on the obverse, the reverse with a dusting of gently mottled tan-apricot patina that appears to drift toward the borders. We note a full quota of satiny mint luster throughout, both sides also sharply struck and a delight to behold. Prior to the mid 20th century, the 1899-O Morgan was considered a rarity in Uncirculated condition. While 12,290,000 examples were struck, many were placed into storage. A few of these bags were released from the Treasury Building in Washington, D.C. in the 1940s and 1950s, but it wasn't until the 1960s that a large quantity became available from a sealed vault at the Philadelphia Mint. Most survivors are in Mint State, though in higher grades the certified population falls off precipitously. Premium Superb Gem such as this are scarce, and the present example is among the finest obtainable in the current market.
