Lot Description
The 1854-D is one of the most elusive Dahlonega Mint gold dollars, ranking fifth in overall and fourth in high grade rarity in this mintmarked series per Doug Winter in the 2023 edition of Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint: 1838-1861. The mintage is a scant 2,935 pieces, the extant population probably on the order of 100 to 200 coins. The typical survivor is circulated, as here, but whereas most are in lower grades and/or significantly impaired, this piece retains enough detail to suggest an EF grade. A thin curving mark is noted from Liberty's cheek into the left obverse field near the star. With pretty orange-apricot colors overall, this is an unusually attractive example of a circulated 1854-D gold dollar.
