Lot Description
Exquisite Deep Cameo Proof 1871 Shield Nickel Single Finest Certified 1871 Shield Nickel. Proof-68 Ultra Cameo (NGC). This beautiful Superb Gem is the single finest certified Proof 1871 Shield nickel known to PCGS and NGC in any category. It is an essentially pristine specimen with flawless-looking surfaces that are free of both toning. Fully struck design elements exhibit a soft satin texture that contrasts markedly with deep pools of reflectivity in the fields. Sure to please even the most discerning numismatist, and worthy of the strongest bids. The estimated mintage for the Proof 1871 Shield nickel is 850 to 1,100 coins, and survivors are readily obtainable by the standards of this series. On the other hand, quality varies somewhat with many examples neither as well struck nor boldly contrasted in finish as the present offering. Given that this piece also possesses virtually pristine surfaces, it is a true wonder coin among survivors of this 19th century Proof nickel five-cent issue. PCGS# 93825. NGC ID: 276M.
