- Tompkins Die Stage 2/2, Rea et al. Die State a. Spectacular target-like toning on both sides with deep steel-blue at the borders blending with reddish-rose before yielding to mottled antique gold in the centers. Hard frosty surfaces sport sharp to full strike detail and show only a touch of light wear to the high points. Condition Census. Typical obverse die state for the variety with bold clashmarks that include bars from the shield at Liberty's ear and olive leaves in the upper left field. The reverse is also clashed, more lightly so, with parts of Liberty's portrait evident within the vertical stripes and the field around the eagle.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: Another coin that will make you say "wow" when you see it in hand. I knew of the coin for several years prior to purchasing it at auction and was ecstatic to add it to my collection.
