Lot Description
1822/'1' Capped Bust Half Dollar. O-101. Rarity-1. MS-61 (PCGS). A highly lustrous and satiny example with wisps of pretty reddish-gold iridescence to otherwise brilliant surfaces. The true overdate status of this variety has long been debated and has been discredited by the Guide Bookas of the 2017 edition. Walter Been appears to have instigated this overdate theory, remarking on the irregularities above the base of the final 2 in the date as early as 1955. However, in our (Bowers and Merena's) cataloging of the Eliasberg collection in 1997, we remarked that "more recent opinion by many specialists is that this irregularity is from a damaged date punch and not an actual overdate." Regardless, the 1822 Overton-101 remains popular with both type collectors and series specialists, especially in attractive Mint State preservation, as here. PCGS# 6130. NGC ID: 24FG.
