- Nicely toned with sunset-gold, purple and blue highlights, this smooth and satiny Superb Gem also possesses all of James Earle Fraser's intended design elements. One of 1,275 Proofs struck, a production total that falls between the two types produced in 1913 and the end of the Proofs in 1916; the Proof mintages dwindled yearly from 1913 onward. As noted in David Lange's reference on the series: <em>"The Philadelphia Mint finally polished its technique for producing Proof nickels starting with this issue. The Proofs of 1914 to 1916 are of far more consistent quality than the 1913 pieces. The texture of these coins is of an even finer grain, giving them a particularly pleasing satin finish"</em> The present piece suits Lange's description to the proverbial "T." Choice and appealing at all levels.
