Lot Description

Breen Die State II. Deep steely charcoal-copper patina with glints of warm rose-brown color evident here and there around the centers. Nice and glossy, the surfaces reveal some ancient build up in the protected areas around and within some of the design elements, but there are no marks of note apart from a few dull nicks after the second letter S in STATES. Minor peripheral softness involves the tops of the letters TY in LIBERTY on the obverse and ES OF AMERICA on the reverse, but otherwise this coin is well struck and retains plenty of bold detail in the presence of moderately heavy wear. The PCGS Fine-15 grade aligns nicely with EAC standards, suggesting a ranking of tied for CC#9 for the challenging Sheldon-116 dies per the 2000 Bland census.
