Lot Description
Production of circulation strike half dollars amounted to only 4,400 coins in 1882, all of which are attributed to the Philadelphia Mint. New examples of this denomination were not needed at the time since large numbers of earlier-dated half dollars that had been hoarded during the Civil War and Reconstruction eras were still being absorbed into commercial channels. The token mintage in 1882, in fact, was achieved to provide coins that could be purchased as gifts and keepsakes, and also to prevent creation of a Proof-only date. A beautiful near-Gem, that offered here is lightly toned in champagne-gold iridescence with full striking detail and semi-reflective fields.
