Lot Description
1867-S Liberty Seated Half Dime. V-1A. MS-64 (PCGS). CAC. A charming piece, both sides exhibit splashes of light copper-rose toning to soft mint luster. Sharply struck over all major design elements. For the second consecutive year the San Francisco Mint produced 120,000 half dimes in 1867. And once again, the rigors of commercial use claimed most examples with the result that survivors are scarce to rare in all grades. With precious few Gems remaining, this premium quality MS-64 represents the finest realistically obtainable for this challenging issue as far as most collectors are concerned. Close inspection with a loupe reveals repunching at the base of the digit 1 in the date, the diagnostic feature of the V-1A attribution. The obverse is perfect with no cracks or clashing. The reverse, on the other hand, is clashed within the wreath at the letters ME in DIME with a die crack from the border to the right ribbon end. Provenance: From the Henry Collection of Liberty Seated Half Dimes. PCGS Population: 11; 8 finer (MS-66+ finest). PCGS# 4391. NGC ID: 234M. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
