- Tompkins Die Stage 1/4; Rea et al. Die State d. A highly significant numismatic rarity whose offering in this sale will excite advanced early quarter variety enthusiasts. The Browning-8 is by far the rarest of the 10 die pairings known for the 1806-dated Draped Bust quarter issue. This variety shares its obverse with the 1806 B-6, B-7 and B-10, which die is identifiable by a perfect letter T in LIBERTY with the adjacent R higher at its base. The reverse of the 1806 B-8 is unknown in any other pairing, on which the stem touches the C in the denomination, this letter with repunching at lower left. Such is the rarity of this variety that even in Good-6 the offered coin is included in the 2010 Rea-Peterson-Karoleff-Kovach census.

This coin is of even greater significance due to the die state. It represents Die State d, as defined in the Rea et al. reference, with a prominent reverse cud break at the border outside the digits 25 in the denomination and the letters UN in UNITED. This is a Rarity-8 die state, with only three examples known. It is a wholesome, well circulated example with nice gloss on smooth-looking surfaces. Wear is heavy, as expected for the assigned grade, yet evenly distributed with all major design elements remaining bold, where allowed by strike. Generally medium silver-gray in color, especially on the reverse. Really a nice piece at the assigned grade level and of the utmost importance for series specialists.
