Losbeschreibung: At AU-50, the certified grade alone is enough to catch the attention of Machin's Mills enthusiasts when it is associated with an example of the Vlack 4-75A die pairing. Looking beyond to the coin itself, where the real test comes, we find that this piece does indeed offer superior quality for the variety. The strike is well centered and bold on a near-perfectly round flan that is free of as-made flaws. The surfaces are smooth in hand and reveal no significant marks. A tad dark in ebony-copper with lighter rose-brown highlights in and around the centers, a trace of overall light roughness to the texture is also noted on the debit side.<p>Finest known for these dies is the beautiful Sydney F. Martin specimen, also certified AU-50 by PCGS, that realized $15,600 in our Spring 2023 Auction, lot 1103. Prior to that coin's certification, the best seen by PCGS was the EF-45 E Pluribus Unum Collection coin that brought $4,080 in our November 2020 Auction. The price difference here is justified, as the Martin coin was superior in all regards. This one is also not up to that level, despite the identical grade from PCGS, but it is stronger than the EPU coin in many respects and deserves to be in any conversation discussing the finest Vlack 4-75A Machin's Mills halfpennies in collector hands.
