Lot Description
1869 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle. MS-61 (PCGS). This is a gorgeous example, both sides vividly toned in dominant reddish-orange with tinges of pale rose evident as the surfaces rotate under a light. Sharply struck with prooflike reflectivity in the fields and uncommonly strong eye appeal for the assigned grade. Produced during an era in which gold coinage had not yet returned to active circulation in the Eastern and Midwestern states since its withdrawal early in the Civil War, it should come as no surprise to read that the 1869 quarter eagle has a circulation strike mintage of just 4,320 pieces. Survivors are scarce in an absolute sense and rare in Mint State, the present example numbering among the finest obtainable by the collector of certified Liberty Head gold coinage. Provenance: From the Marc Kravit Collection. PCGS Population: 7; 10 finer (MS-64 finest). PCGS# 7809. NGC ID: 25KD. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
