Lot Description
1787 Fugio Copper. Pointed Rays. Newman 21-I, W-7010. Rarity-4. UNITED STATES, 4 Cinquefoils. VF-20 (PCGS). 162.8 grains. An unusual early die state, with just the merest evidence of a single light clash, manifesting as the imprint of the sunface in the ring at 6 o'clock on the reverse. This variety typically comes with significant clashing. Rob described this early state as "one almost imperceptible reverse clash; no clash marks on the obverse -- very rare." This example shows lovely light brown color with some minor dark striations at the right base of the obverse and at the upper left of the sundial. A hint of maroon patina is present at the lower right side of the sundial. Some old thin scratches cross between ARE and ONE horizontally on the reverse. An attractive specimen overall, very desirable for Fugio die state specialists. PCGS# 889. Provenance: From the Rob Retz Family Collection.
