Lot 322 1801 S-222 R1. PCGS graded AU-58. CAC.Glossy light to medium brown with darker steel brown toning on the devices and frosty golden tan toning faded down from mint color in protected areas. A beautiful cent, just a few tiny ticks from flawless. The best identifying marks are a tick on the eyebrow and a tiny planchet void on the right bottom of the numerator in the fraction (as struck). EDS, Breen state I, prior to any rim cud breaks on the obverse. Nicely struck, much better than most of this variety (an important fact noted on the Doug Smith collection envelope). Called AU55 and tied for CC#4 in the Bland census. Noyes says AU50 and CC#3, his photo #23949. Our grade is AU55.The attribution and Nancy & Bryan Collection provenance are shown on the PCGS label.
