BB Die State I. Light to medium pewter and steel-gray surfaces retain overall bold detail from a well centered, nicely executed strike. There is evidence of an old, light cleaning here, but faint traces of luster persist in protected areas, and no sizeable marks are seen. Bowers-Borckardt 184 is one of the more easily attributable die marriages for the 1800 Draped Bust silver dollar, the reverse with a prominent die dot in the lower part of the letter E in UNITED and an equally pronounced die flaw at the border before the letter U in the same word. As well, the letters in the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM are smaller than those seen on any other reverse die of this issue. Since all but two of the reverse dies for the 1799 issue also display small letters in the legend, it is likely that this is one of the first reverse dies prepared for 1800-dated coinage. BB-184 represents the only use of this reverse, hence the ease with which examples can be attributed. That offered here is a suitable mid-grade example for circulated type purposes.
