- This popular type issue in the Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle series represents the first year in which the early United States Mint delivered large numbers of half dollars at the request of contemporary bullion depositors. The cessation of silver dollar coinage in early 1804 left the half dollar as the most convenient silver denomination for use in large transactions and as part of bullion reserves, and by calendar year 1806 the mintage of the latter had soared to 839,576 pieces. Tompkins Die Stage 1/3.
