- Lot Description
- THE SOMMELIER COLLECTION A lovely mostly RED N-9. A visually impressive GEM example of this popular Red Book variety. About 80% of the original RED color survives, gently mellowing to a soft brown. Exceptionally well struck from a very early state of the dies, which shows undescribed die lines at M in AMERICA on the reverse. It is thought these lines were caught and quickly removed by lapping the die. None of the standard references including Newcomb and Noyes describe these lines, and they were described first in its previous auction appearance. The eye appeal is exceptional, free of distracting marks or flecks of any kind and the technical quality is sublime. PCGS 7, NGC 2, CAC 6. This coin realized $10,575 in Heritage's January 2015 FUN auction; more recently a much less red example sold for $9,000, so clearly the current Collectors Universe is too low, and we suspect it will bid closer to the CAC CPG value of $11,200. A great coin one that will delight any advanced early copper collector! Good luck. Cert. Number 28676820 PCGS # 1749.00
