- Brilliant surfaces allow ready appreciation of an exquisite finish in a watery, boldly reflective composition. Fully struck throughout, also as befits a carefully prepared example of this type, with an overall appearance that is suggestive of an even higher numeric grade.

Half dollars of this type were authorized by the Act of May 5, 1936 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding and settlement of New Rochelle, New York. A maximum mintage of 25,000 pieces was allowed, all of which were struck (as well as 25 additional examples for assay purposes). In the end, however, just 15,251 coins were actually distributed to contemporary buyers, the remaining 9,749 pieces being melted in the Mint. Although not specifically called for in the authorizing Act, 50 New Rochelle half dollars were struck on Proof planchets, receiving just a single impression from the dies. Anthony J. Swiatek (2012) estimates that perhaps only four to 10 of these special strikings are extant. This is one of those coins, its vibrantly reflective finish confirming its special status. For the advanced numismatist specializing in classic commemorative coinage, the desirability of this piece is undeniable.
