Lot Description
A GEM Proof Civil War date Seated dollar. As the war raged on demand from the few contemporary collectors shrank and only 470 Proofs were struck. Very few examples survive in such a lofty state of preservation, the typical Proof 1864 dollar is graded PR62 to PR64; Gem grade examples are RARE, and excessively so any finer. This is a totally original example with clean, boldly reflective mirrors that beam with a brilliant watery feel on both sides. A gentle overtone of antique silver-tan and undertones of lilac-blue, pale gold, and soft peach-gold. Sharply struck, this example has a fabulous look. Only 470 Proofs were struck. PCGS 18, NGC 13. While the most recent example sold in April 2022 for $8,100 in April 2019 one sold for $13,200. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $15,000. PCGS has graded a half dozen finer, but none of these have sold in auction. Worthy of a very carefully curated collection of Proof Seated Liberty dollars. Good luck. Cert. Number 44507769 PCGS # 7007
