- With light iridescent toning on frosty to semi-reflective surfaces. Due to the release of many earlier dated examples that had been hoarded (often after export) during the Civil War and Reconstruction eras, yearly circulation strike mintages for new quarters and half dollars remained limited during the 1880s. In 1888, for example, only 12,000 half dollars were struck for theoretical commercial use.
