Lot Description: Breen Die State III. A highly desirable condition rarity for both the type and Sheldon number. Frosty surfaces are warmly toned in medium brown and olive-copper with appreciable faded mint color in the protected areas around many of the design elements. There is plenty of good gloss, but few troublesome marks, although accuracy does compel us to mention a number of light scuffs and nicks in the centers that include a faint vertical scratch on Liberty's neck. The reverse rim is lightly bruised at the letter U in UNITED, which serves as another useful identifier for provenance purposes. The left obverse periphery is softly struck, and a trace of light friction to the central high points is evident, but the obverse is sharp at right, the reverse throughout. Del Bland assigns this coin an EAC grade of AU50 and ranks it tied for CC#5 for the Sheldon-282 dies in his 2000 census; Noyes says EAC AU55, net EF45, and tied for CC#7. With its certified grade of MS-62 BN from PCGS, as well, this is an uncommonly high grade coin in an S-282 Classic Head cent that holds strong appeal for Mint State type collectors as well as early copper specialists.
