Tompkins Die Stage 1/2. A noteworthy second offering for the key date 1794 half dollar from the Brookfield Collection, here in a lovely example of the conditionally challenged Overton-104 die pairing. The surfaces are about as perfect as one could expect for a Flowing Hair half dollar at the heavily circulated Good grade level, with richly original toning in golden-charcoal and no troublesome marks. Wear is heavier at lower right obverse and upper right reverse, the former area, in particular, with little detail remaining. For other areas we note bold outline detail to the major design elements including, among other attributes, a bold Liberty portrait, sharp LIBERTY, and fully legible date even through the final digit 4 is somewhat faint. As with most die marriages of the 1794 Flowing Hair half dollar, the O-104 is currently unknown in any Mint State grade. There are also no full About Uncirculated coins extant, and with its superior qualities for the assigned grade this originally preserved and attractive Good-4 is sure to please many early half dollar variety collectors.
