Lot Description
1783 Nova Constellatio Copper. Crosby 2-B, W-1865. CONSTELLATIO, Pointed Rays, Small U.S. VF-25 BN (NGC). Dominant medium brown patina with tinges of gray-brown and light rose outlining the devices or intermingled in the center of the reverse. The central reverse is softly defined with only a partial U.S. remaining, but the balance of the design is sharp and clear. Overall wear is rather evenly distributed, in fact, and the surfaces are smooth apart from a few tiny, generally inconspicuous planchet pits scattered about on both sides. For the grade, a bold and appealing representative of the type.<br /> Collecting a complete set of Nova Constellatio coppers 1783-1785 is an interesting pursuit and one that can be completed, there being no impossible rarities. Following these is the 1786 issue, contemporary counterfeit, which is optional to collect. Interestingly, throughout the early American series contemporary counterfeits, most notably made by Machin's Mills, are often valued far above official issues!
