A simply exquisite coin. As an issue, the 1880-S may be one of the most readily obtainable Morgan dollars in the finer Mint State grades, but even so precious few examples are as expertly preserved, visually appealing, and close to pristine as this fabulous Ultra Gem. Intensely lustrous surfaces are satiny in the fields with soft mint frost engaging the fully impressed motifs. Bright and brilliant overall with not even a single distracting mark or other blemish to report.<p>One of the most ubiquitous issues in the Morgan dollar series, the 1880-S is the most common of the early date issues in Mint State. Due to the fact that literally millions of the 8,900,000 coins struck remained in federal storage until released by the Treasury Department in the 1950s and through the mid 1960s. Given their ready availability and the high standards of quality to which virtually all were produced, 1880-S dollars have been extremely popular with type collectors seeking a single Mint State coin to represent the Morgan dollar series. However, at the threshold of numismatic perfection, the 1880-S has been confirmed as a noteworthy condition rarity by four decades of third party certification.<p>A trio of overdates for the 1880-S are part of the Top 100 Morgan dollar VAM varieties, and these are even rarer in the finest Mint State grades than the issue in its entirety. The VAM-8 and VAM-9 are the so-called "Diagonal" overdates attributable by die fill and diagonal lines within the upper loop of the first digit 8 in the date. The obverse die is the same, but the VAM-8 is the Medium S reverse of the 1880/79-S, while the VAM-9 represented here is the Large S. One of the very finest seen by PCGS, CAC and PQ for both the VAM-8 and VAM-9 attributions of this overdate, this is a true wonder coin that belongs in a leading Morgan dollar variety set.
