Lot Description

Although currently receiving little recognition outside of a group of specialized numismatists, the die varieties of the Lafayette dollar afford an interesting and untapped area of collecting. All the information one needs to get started can be found in Anthony J. Swiatek's 2012 reference <em>Encyclopedia of the Commemorative Coins of the United States</em>, pp. 60-65. Three obverse and four reverse dies in four collectible pairings have been identified. The offered coin represents die pairing 1-B, the most plentiful and believed to account for 52.9% of examples. Die pairings 3-D and (especially) 1-A are much rarer but, given that few numismatists are currently looking and premiums have yet to be attached, opportunities for cherrypicking definitely exist!
