- An incredible Superb Gem copper-nickel Indian cent that will be just right for a top-quality Mint State type or date set. Both sides are intensely lustrous, the fields lightly prooflike and supporting softly frosted motifs. Hints of softness are seen at the tips of the uppermost feathers in Liberty's headdress and within isolated portions of the wreath on the reverse, but otherwise we note razor sharp to full strike detail. Displaying wisps of pinkish-rose iridescence to dominant tan-gold coloration, the surfaces are essentially pristine. Technically superior with exceptional eye appeal.
With 49,840,000 coins struck, the 1863 has the highest mintage of any small cent issue from the 1860s. It is readily available in most Mint State grades but becomes critically scarce above MS-66. The present example is one of the very finest known, tied with just six other grading events at the top of the PCGS Population Report. It represents a serious prize for advanced numismatists.
