Lot Description

Enchanting surfaces are warmly toned in the centers, the peripheries with crescents of vivid reddish-rose and golden-olive. From a net mintage of 8,104 pieces, approximately 5,200 Proof 1938 half dollars are believed extant (per Roger W. Burdette, <em>United States Proof Coins: 1936-1942</em>, 2016). This is a relatively limited total by the Walking Liberty series, and this issue is the scarcest of its type after only the 1936 and 1937. We have handled precious few examples - even at the Superb Gem level - that are as technically superior and visually appealing as that offered here. Worthy of the strongest bids.
