- The satiny snow-white design elements appear to float untethered amid deeply reflective fields. A hint of pale golden iridescence engages the peripheries, especially on the obverse, but the overall appearance is one of sparkling brilliance. Fully struck and captivating to review in direct lighting. Along with the Proof issues of 1897 and 1898, the 1896 is the most consistently well produced and attractive in the series. Even so, few survivors from a mintage of 762 Proofs are as exquisite as this gorgeous specimen. Perhaps only 15 to 20% percent of these display Deep Cameo contrast, and even those are typically in grades of Proof-66 and lower. At Proof-67 Deep Cameo, the present piece is among the very finest known to PCGS for both the date and the entire Barber quarter series. Only 13 coins have been certified finer by PCGS in this category, making this an important opportunity for both type collectors and Barber specialists.
