Lot Description
1794 Flowing Hair Half Dollar. O-106, T-4. Rarity-6-. Fine-12 (PCGS). A well defined coin for the assigned grade, both sides are uniformly denticulated around the borders with all devices suitably bold in detail. Accuracy compels us to mention a somewhat glossy texture to the surfaces, as well as wispy pin scratches and, in the left obverse field, several tiny digs. Lightly toned in iridescent golden-gray and silver-olive, this is a more affordable example of the scarce and historically significant 1794 half dollar. The premier issue of this denomination struck in the fledgling United States Mint, the 1794 is also one of only two dates in the brief Flowing Hair series. Survivors are far more elusive than those of the second year 1795, Overton-106 being one of the rarer die marriages of the issue. PCGS# 39208. NGC ID: 24E6.
