- 1881 Pattern Liberty Nickel. Judd-1671, Pollock-1872. Rarity-6+. Proof-63 (NGC). The obverse feature a left-facing portrait of Liberty that is very similar to that which the Mint adopted for regular issue Liberty Nickel production in 1883. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is around the border and the date 1881 is below. The reverse has a very simple design with a wreath of corn, cotton and wheat encircling a Roman numeral V. Struck in nickel with a plain edge.<br /> Silver-gray surfaces are lightly toned over a satin-to-semi-reflective finish. Sharply struck in most areas, and uncommonly free of detracting blemishes at the Choice grade level.
