- Tompkins Die Stage 1/2. Condition Census #1 for the die marriage, this premium quality example is the finest and only Mint State 1806/5 Overton-102 half dollar listed in the Spring 2025 revision to Stephen J. Herrman's Auction & Mail Bid Prices Realized for Bust Half Dollars: 1794-1839. Both sides are deeply and originally toned in mostly charcoal-olive and steely-rose patina. At more direct viewing angles, however, we do note brighter undertones of lavender, cobalt blue and antique gold colors that have a target-like distribution from the centers to the borders. Well struck for the type, the borders are nicely denticulated and only at the obverse stars and in the center of the reverse do we see mentionable softness of detail. There are no blemishes of note, just the wispy handling marks that one would expect at the assigned grade level. A lovely Draped Bust half dollar, and an important piece for both high grade type and variety collectors.
