1864 Gold Dollar. AU-58 (PCGS). Bold honey-rose patina blankets surfaces that are sharply defined with nearly complete satin luster. Just a bit of friction and light muting to the surfaces precludes a Mint State grade. Only 5,900 circulation strike gold dollars of this date were produced during the economically chaotic penultimate year of the Civil War, and survivors are scarce to rare at all levels of preservation.
